I always get a little extra excited when Sinclair Patterns drops a new design for woven fabrics. We all know and love them for their incredibly well-drafted knits, but their woven releases are just as impressive. Their latest is the Thea Woven Boatneck Blouse, and the moment I saw those classic, clean lines, I knew I needed one in my closet. It has exactly the kind of relaxed but tailored vibe I look for in everyday wear.
The pattern
The Thea is a beautifully drafted woven top featuring a really elegant boatneck. What caught my eye immediately is how versatile it is. A good boatneck frame is incredibly flattering, and the pattern includes enough gentle shaping to keep it from looking boxy. Sinclair always provides great options, and the Thea is no exception, offering different sleeve lengths and a hem complete with side vents for ease of movement. It’s the kind of basic that you can dress up for the office or throw on with jeans for the weekend.
Fabric choice
For my first version, I decided to go with a beautiful cotton voile. Here in the Pacific Northwest, dressing for the weather is all about smart layering. Cotton voile is lightweight and incredibly breathable, making this blouse perfect for wearing under a chunky cardigan on a chilly, damp morning, but still breezy enough to keep me comfortable when the afternoon sun finally breaks through. Plus, from a sewing perspective, cotton voile is just a dream to work with. It takes a press beautifully, which makes getting crisp edges around the neckline a breeze.

Construction & Fit
As always with Sinclair, the drafting is meticulous. I used the Regular height projector file, and it is such a relief to have those height proportions dialed in right from the start without having to manually adjust the length of the bodice or the sleeves.
I sewed my measured size straight from the file, and the fit right off the machine is fantastic – the pattern has relaxed fit at waist and hip so I don’t need to grade. The neckline sits perfectly across the collarbone without gaping, which can sometimes be a tricky fitting issue with boatneck designs. The instructions walked me right through the construction, and the finishing techniques resulted in a really professional-looking garment inside and out. It required some patience to sew all those French seams but it’s totally fine for a beginner to use the pattern.
Final Thoughts
The Thea Boatneck Blouse is definitely a winner for me. Working with the cotton voile made for a gorgeous, The Thea Boatneck Blouse is absolutely a winner in my book. Pairing this pattern with cotton voile resulted in a gorgeous, breathable top with a wonderfully feminine feel that slips effortlessly into my daily layering rotation here in the PNW. I’m already checking my stash to plan my next version—I think a drapey rayon challis or a crisp linen blend would be fantastic for summer. If you’re on the hunt for a beautifully feminine woven piece that delivers Sinclair’s signature meticulous fit right off the machine, I highly recommend giving the Thea a try.
